Witches in the Grimm Fairy Tales

Once upon a time, there was a witch. She was beautiful and powerful. She was frightening and dangerous. She was everything people feared… and everything they wanted to be.

Join Drs. Sara Cleto and Brittany Warman, founders of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic, for a 2-hour lecture and workshop on witches in the Grimms' fairy tales. After a short conversation about the different aspects of the witches in these tales, Sara and Brittany will discuss five different stories from the Grimms' collection – “Rapunzel,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “The Three Spinners,” “Frau Trude,” and “All Fur.” Copies of the stories will be shared in advance, but brief overviews will be given during the class as well. The day with conclude with an informal, optional exercise in writing poetry, spells, and charms from the perspectives of the diverse witch-aspects discussed in class (and you will get a small souvenir to take home as well!)
